About the Alaska Space Grant Program

The Alaska Space Grant Program (ASGP) is a consortium of public and private universities and non-profit organizations that sponsors a broad range of programs to enhance teaching, research, and educational outreach within aerospace and earth science, and other NASA related STEM disciplines throughout Alaska. The Alaska Space Grant Program (ASGP) was established at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1991 under a Phase II Program Grant from NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program.

The Alaska Space Grant Program takes advantage of the unique strengths and interests of each affiliate institution, strategically implementing programs that bring to those institutions relevant NASA science and technology. We do this (i) by supporting undergraduate students conducting research on NASA relevant topics and/or participating in NASA relevant competitions, (ii) by supporting graduate students conducting NASA relevant research with their faculty advisors, (iii) by supporting affiliate educational projects that brings NASA science and technology into the classroom. Additionally, Alaska Space Grant Program recognizes the difficulties of providing NASA relevant curriculum and degree choices to students residing in rural communities, which are typically not on the road system and are at vast distances from any major university.  To help bring NASA to these communities we support the development of educational opportunities at the pre-college and university level specifically in support of our rural communities and targeted at increasing enrollment in STEM disciplines.

Alaska Space Grant continues to provide:

1. ACCESS by working with our rural communities to support their precollege and university student education with NASA relevant, culturally responsive programs;
2. RELEVANCE by supporting opportunities for authentic, hands-on NASA relevant student experiences in science and engineering for both undergraduate and graduate students; and
3. PERMANENCE by connecting Alaska students and faculty to NASA.
