The Alaska Space Grant Program invites applications from undergraduate students for travel funding to present research results at professional conferences or participate in national STEM/NASA competitions. The purpose of this award is to foster academic development, support dissemination of student research relevant to NASA strategic interests, and encourage student participation in national hands-on engineering and scientific challenges. International travel is not allowed.
Award Amount: Up to $2000 per student
Application Window: Open/Rolling (first-come, first-served basis)
Submission Deadline: Minimum of one month (30 days) prior to the start of the requested travel

- Project and Event Summary: Describe the research project you will be presenting or the national competition you are competing in. Explain the scope, methodology, and key outcomes.
- NASA Relevance and ASGP Alignment: Briefly explain how your research, or competition aligns with NASA's strategic goals.
- Statement of Purpose and Professional Benefit: Explain your specific role a the event (e.g., oral paper presentation, poster session, competition lead). Detail how attending this event will advance your academic goals, research trajectory, or career aspirations.
- Itemized Travel Budget: provide a detailed breakdown table listing all anticipated costs
- Supporting Documentation:
- Proof of Participation: Official notice/email of abstract or paper acceptance, or conference invitation, or official team registration confirmation or invitation.
- Abstract/Project Summary: A copy of the accepted abstract or competition project description.
Post-Travel Report Instructions
Award recipients are required to submit a Final Travel Report within 30 days of returning from travel. Completing this requirement is mandatory for final travel reimbursement and future funding eligibility.
The report (1-2 pages) should be submitted as a PDF to uaf-spacegrant@alaska.edu using the email subject line: Undergraduate Travel Award Final Report, and contain:
- Header Information
- Awardee Name, School, and Advisor Name
- Name of Event, Location, and Travel Dates
- Presentation/Project title
- Summary of Activities and Accomplishments
- Describe your activities at the event (presentation given, sessions attended)
- Highlight key results, awards won, or recognition received during the competition/conference
- Impact Statement
- Summarize how this travel experience impacted your educational and professional growth.
- Outline any immediate next steps (e.g. manuscript submission, follow-up research, team continuation).
- Photos
- Provide at least 1-2 high-resolution photos of you at the conference/competition (e.g. presenting at your poster, speaking at the podium, working with your competition vehicle/project.
- Include descriptive photo captions and grant permission to ASGP to use images for newsletters, NASA reports, and website showcases.
- Final Expense Summary
- A final table providing the actual expenses incurred.
